Winter months can often bring a sense of melancholy, leaving many to grapple with feelings of sadness and isolation. Known widely as “the winter blues,” some may experience more profound symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

At Eli’s Place, we believe that community support is crucial in navigating seasonal depression. We are excited to share tips and personal experiences from our friends and community members to help you not only survive but thrive this winter season. Together, we can find joy and warmth, lift each other’s spirits, and promote well-being during the winter months.

Eli's Place friend Emma Little

“Waking up earlier in the winter helps me beat the blues by soaking up as much sunlight as possible. I love waking up just before or as the sun rises, then heading out for a walk or a quick workout to energize myself and set a positive tone for the day.”

“I usually feel best when I am progressing toward my values. Sometimes I have to be more deliberate in setting small goals. Having a plan gives me something to focus on and keeps me moving in the right direction. Just make sure to plan time to relax as well” 🙂

“To chase away the winter blues, I embrace my dog’s favourite season by taking him for long, tech-free walks. It’s a refreshing break that clears my mind. I also prioritize morning exercise to boost my mood and energy during winter’s short, dreary days.”

“I embrace winter by getting outside for a snowshoe with my dogs and warming up afterwards with a book in a hot bath or snuggled up on the sofa in front of my wood stove.

“Bright and cozy is my winter mantra. These things cheer me up: candles, mini light strands strewn throughout my apartment, a basil or rosemary plant to sniff in my kitchen and fluffy throws. Sharing time with family and friends helps keep me feeling positive.”

“In the winter months I love to spend time in my hot tub watching the beautiful sunsets or having a morning coffee. It gives me the pleasure of enjoying the fresh air and peace of nature, while keeping warm!”
