Wim Wenders explores what it means to be human through the eyes of Hirayama, a Japanese man living his best life. Hirayama follows a structured everyday life as a sanitation engineer, dedicating his free time to his passion for music, books and photography. As his past is gradually revealed through a series of unexpected encounters, we learn how Hirayama finds beauty in simplicity.
- Actor Koji Yakusho won the Best Actor award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival for his moving portrayal of Hirayama.
- Featured at TIFF, Perfect Days was lauded by Marc Glassman, film critic for Classical 96.3 FM, as “a mysterious humanistic drama of power and beauty.”
- Perfect Days is Japan’s submission to the Oscars for Best International Feature.

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16th, 2023, supporters of Eli’s Place have a unique opportunity to see a special advance screening of the acclaimed film Perfect Days at the Cineplex Cinemas Varsity and VIP Theatre (located at 55 Bloor Street West in the Manulife Centre, in Toronto).

We are very pleased to welcome back Peter Howell who will introduce the film and will be available for conversation after the showing.

“I support the sincere and clear mission of Eli’s Place, to provide a rural retreat for young people who need assistance with mental health issues and re-engaging with life. I had this in mind as I selected Wim Wenders’ award-winning “Perfect Days” for our second film night. It’s a delightful meditation about a middle-aged man named Hirayama, played by Japanese actor Koji Yakusho, who works as a sanitation engineer in Tokyo. He does a job few would want or envy. But his cheerful approach to his mundane tasks and his wonder at the world around him — helping younger people as he goes — inspires the kind of serenity that Eli’s Place aims to foster and which we could all use a little more of.“
— Peter Howell, Movie Critic, Toronto Star.
